LAS VEGAS, N.M. — A rough outing on the mound led to a doubleheader defeat for Eastern New Mexico softball against New Mexico Highlands on Tuesday afternoon. The Cowgirls took Game 1, 9-7, before cruising to a 9-1 Game 2 victory.
In Game 1, neither side wasted any time. The Hounds (13-9) got on the board first, as Parker Smith scored on a passed ball in the top of the first inning.
However, Highlands (3-9) quickly countered with two runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead, 2-1. Desiree Madrid’s sacrifice fly brought home Camrynn Ziegler, before an infield error brought in Breanna Cabrera.
ENMU countered with two more runs in the second inning to regain the lead. Another mistake on the Cowgirls’ part led to two runs scoring on an error in center.
Once again, however, Highlands wouldn’t be denied as it scored four more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Isabella Scarale scored on a passed ball to tie it at 3-all, before Brooklynn DeLozier scored on yet another passed ball. Christian Bobian, who advanced to third on that passed ball, soon scored on a fielder’s choice, before Bayley Legaretta’s single brought home Cabrera to extend the lead to 6-3.
Down 9-3 in the seventh, the Hounds tried to put together one last rally. Samantha Brockman’s double to left field netted two runs, which was followed by a Jennifer McElroy double, scoring Brockman.
But while McElroy scored on a two-out single from Kamalani Peneku, Kiana Zerr would go on to fly out to center two batters later.
Cabrera went 2-for-3 with the aforementioned RBI, while Scarale got credited for the win, as she went 6 2/3 innings, striking out four, while also going 1-for-2 with an RBI at the dish.
As for Eastern, seven players accounted for seven hits, while Brockman’s two-run double was actually part of a pinch hit at-bat. McElroy was charged with the loss, allowing five runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Second-game statistics were not available at press time.
Highlands (4-9) will resume its season with a doubleheader against Colorado Mesa on Saturday, while Eastern (13-10) will look to get back on track with a 3 p.m. MST Friday doubleheader at Angelo State.
