1983: Joe Whitehead was the new range conservationist for the Clovis office of the Soil Conservation Service.

A six-year-veteran of the SCS, he had transferred to Clovis to replace Jim Riding.

The SCS eventually become the Natural Resources Conservation Service, an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Whitehead, who earned a reputation for his witty presentations, retired from NRCS in April 2012, after more than 35 years with the agency, working in both the Clovis and Portales offices, and with landowners all over eastern New Mexico.

He lives in the Odessa/Midland, Texas, area today.

1958: Inclement weather and icy roads had kept the crowd small at the Curry County 4-H recognition night, but those who attended were treated to a colored slide show by Lyndal Valentine of Clovis and Don Chapman of Portales, both recent attendees at the 4-H National Congress in Chicago.

Sondra Marks, president of the Curry County 4-H Council, awarded 4-H Council recognition plaques to Joe B. Sisler of Clovis National Bank and Cash Skarda of the Citizen's Bank of Clovis in recognition of their assistance with county 4-H programs.

County Agent Phil Crystal honored three county 4-H agents with the Woolworth award: Mrs. C.A. Starbuck, Claud 4-H girls' leader; Dr. E.E. Kraus, Clovis 4-H boys' leader; and Mrs. Fred Danforth, Texico 4-H girls' leader.
