School officials warn against fundraising scams

CLOVIS — If someone asks you to support Clovis Municipal Schools by purchasing a branded item such as a T-shirt or calendar ... be skeptical.

Jelayne Curtis, executive assistant to Superintendent Jody Balch, said Wednesday the district does not use third parties to solicit funds.

She said CMS sends out a reminder news release periodically and was prompted to do so again this week because a company had been contacting local businesses and requesting donations on behalf of CMS.

Curtis said that while the district does frequently undergo fundraising efforts, any contact would be done through a representative of the school, such as an employee, student or booster club official.

Curtis said since the district began issuing the press release a few years ago the number of improper solicitations have decreased. But before that there were several instances of third-party organizations pretending to raise money for the district by selling branded items.
