Texico, 26-0, receives top seed in Class 3A

Seven local teams make field; Portales seeded sixth in Class 4A.

Throughout the small-school boys basketball season, Texico and Melrose have set the bar. Melrose has won 19 straight since it last lost to … Texico, which hasn’t lost in 26 tries this season.

They’ve both been honored with No. 1 seeds in the state basketball tournament brackets, released Sunday night by the New Mexico Activities Association.

First-round games will be hosted by the eight higher seeds in each bracket, with quarterfinal and semifinal games scattered throughout Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Bernalillo. Title games will be March 10 at The Pit in Albuquerque.

Overall, seven local teams received seeds in four classifications. Here’s how the brackets shaped out:

The Buffaloes are the top seed in Class 1A and will host Santa Fe Waldorf. The winner will see the winner of the 8-9 game between Vaughn and Grady. Floyd, which finished second in District 4-1A, will be the seventh seed and host Cimarron. Elida was seeded No. 13 and will travel to Quemado.

Dora is the ninth seed in Class 2A and will travel to Gateway Christian.

Texico, seeded No. 1 in 3A, is one of four District 5-3A teams in the field. Also making the tournament are Santa Rosa at No. 4, Clayton at No. 12 and Tucumcari at No. 13.

In Class 4A, Portales is the No. 6 seed and will host Navajo Prep. District 4-4A champion Hope Christian is the No. 3 seed.
