ENMU could finish between third and fifth in LSC field
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Marquita Daniels scored 19 points, and Angelo State kept pace for first place in the Lone Star Conference with a 59-56 win Thursday evening over Eastern New Mexico.
Dezirae Hampton added 11 for the Rambelles (20-5, 15-5), who had to sweat out a last-second 3-point attempt from the visiting Greyhounds despite a cold-shooting night.
The Greyhounds (16-10, 12-7) could finish as high as third — via three-way tiebreaker with Texas A&M-Commerce (17-10, 13-6) and Tarleton State (18-9, 12-7) — or as low as fifth, depending on their game Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville and plenty of tiebreaker scenarios.
Eastern shot 22-of-64 on the night, including 4-of-23 from long distance, and had three players with double-digit minutes go scoreless on 0-of-13 shooting — with Jasmine Hotchkins and Brandi Gomez 0-of-5 and Amari Joseph 0-of-3.
Kaylee Edgemon scored 14 to lead four in double figures for the Greyhounds, but after their double-figure scorers — Daeshi McCants with 11 and Sarina Johnson and Shelby Jones with 10 each — only one other Greyhound notched more than three points.
The game featured 11 lead changes and seven ties, with three lead changes coming in the fourth quarter and a 56-all tie on Mikaehla Connor's jumper with :48 to play.
The Rambelles went the final 1:30 without a bucket, but survived with 3-of-4 shooting from the line in the final minute - including a pair by Daniels with :19 to play to give Angelo the lead for good.
Eastern had a final chance with seven seconds to play, but a game-tying attempt by Johnson fell short.
