Floyd tops Grady in boys contest

FLOYD — A strong third-quarter push allowed the Floyd Broncos to pull ahead for good in a 58-47 boys basketball 1A-District 4 win over Grady Thursday night. The Broncos outscored Grady, 22-9 in the third period.

“We did real good with boxing out and we trapped pretty effectively,” Floyd coach Steve Foust said. “The guys came in really focused, and they did a great job against Chisum Rush and Lucas Whitehead, who are two really tough players.”

Grady (13-11, 5-4) led by five to start the second quarter, but a 12-4 second quarter for Floyd (11-9, 5-3) gave the Broncos a slim 20-17 lead heading into intermission. The aforementioned third quarter proved to be the difference, but it was not the only thing.

Floyd made 21-of-33 free throws, as Foust went on to explain that his jump shooting team’s ability to penetrate defenses, pass the ball and reverse quickly makes it difficult on just about any opponent they face.

Eric Terry led Floyd with 14 points, while Adrian Borrego added 11 and Jarett East had 10 points. The Bronchos, meanwhile, were led by Rush’s 19 points, along with 14 more from Whitehead.

With the win, Floyd pulls ahead of Grady for second-place in the district, as the Broncos try to preserve a Top 5 spot in the state, with just two games left to play. “It’s a big win, not only in the district, but also in the state,” Foust said of Thursday’s victory.

“We’re ranked fifth by MaxPreps and Grady’s seventh, so it’s important for seeding come tournament time. We can control it from here if we win out, and for us, every game gets bigger from here.”
