TEXICO — Wolverine fans got treated to a pair of tight ball games in Saturday's District 5-3A doubleheader against Santa Rosa High School. But then the second quarter happened.
Minutes 9-16 saw both Texico teams take control of things, and a pair of wins were pretty much in hand when the fourth quarters began — 56-25 for the girls, followed by 67-51 for the boys.
The Wolverine boys, led by 20 from Dalton Thatcher, improved to 21-0 overall and 2-0 in the early part of district play.
Nathan Phipps added 14 and Skyler Davis 10 in the victory, which featured a 22-12 second quarter and a 16-9 third to ice it. "
It was kind of a momentum game," Texico coach Ty Thatcher said. "We got into a rhythm. Dalton hit a big three, then was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three free throws. That helped us get a cushion.
"Defensively, we did a good job in the the third quarter, holding them to nine. We were able to tack onto the lead, and just hold onto the ball in the fourth quarter."
The Texico girls (17-3, 2-0), who claimed their 11th straight win, got 13 from Maryelle Dickerman and 11 from Baylee Sours.
"We had a lot of turnovers in the first quarter, didn't take care of the basketball," Texico coach Richard Luscombe said. "We didn't have many chances to score. Once we started scoring the ball, things got better. We also did a better job of playing defense."
Grady girls 56, San Jon 19 — Yara Sotelo had 20, and Timia Northcutt and Kristin Grau scored 10 each for the Bronchos (13-8, 4-2), who never looked back after a 24-6 first quarter.
"We ran a really good press against them tonight and scored big in the first quarter," Grady coach Tammy Northcutt said. "I gave my younger kids a chance to play tonight and they did well. We shot the ball well tonight, we struggled a little bit the past couple games shooting."
Grady boys 61, San Jon 41 — Chisum Rush and Lucas Whitehead combined to outscore the Coyotes, and the Bronchos led 23-6 after one.
Rush scored 23 points and hit five of Grady's seven 3-pointers, while Whitehead notched most of his 18 points in the paint.
Isaiah Mitchell added 10 for Grady.
