ENMU men fall to West Texas A&M

CANYON, TEXAS — For the second time this season, the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds proved they couldn’t keep pace with the powerful West Texas A&M Buffaloes. The ENMU men’s team lost at home earlier in the season by 30 to the Buffs, and didn’t fare much better on the road on Thursday night, falling 82-63.

Right out of the gate, West Texas A&M (18-2, 8-2 Lone Star Conference) had Eastern’s number. The Buffs quickly stormed out to a commanding 13-4 lead, thanks to a layup from David Chavlovich and a 3 from CJ Jennings.

The lead soon extended to 11, but Eastern (8-11, 3-7) responded with a Nick Brown trey and a Shawn Shelton dunk to cut the lead to 26-20. Chavlovich’s 3-pointer then kicked off a 10-2 run to end the half, quickly pulling the Buffs ahead by 14.

Things didn’t get much better for the Hounds from there. A trio of Jordan Evans 3s extended the lead past 20 points, as the Buffs shot 12-for-31 (38.7 percent) from downtown, while also hitting on 28-of-35 free throws (80.0 percent).

Chavlovich finished with 18 points, after making 4-of-9 shots from downtown. Zach Parker led ENMU with 16 points on just 5-of-15 shooting, while LaMarquis Thompson (14) and Shelton (11) also finished in double-figures.

The Greyhounds will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to defending LSC champion UT-Permian Basin (3 p.m. MST). Last time around, the Falcons beat the Greyhounds 84-74 back on Nov. 30.
