Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Reporter's notebook: From the ashes

In Greek mythology, when the phoenix died, a new one would soon rise from its ashes.

That metaphor isn’t lost on the New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home, whose newest project is facing a major setback.

A cottage on the Portales-based organization’s first satellite campus in Estancia was gutted by flames Sunday after a faulty fluorescent light ignited, according to an article on NMBCH’s website.

While no one was hurt in the accident, the building — which was gifted to NMBCH — was compromised.

NMBCH President Randy Rankin called the event a tragedy, but said his organization wouldn’t be deterred.

“With God still in charge, we will continue on. We will rebuild, and continue the project in order to serve children in the central part of our state,” he said.
