PORTALES — Texas Woman’s University made it close, but the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team hung on to win 58-56 in a Lone Star Conference showdown Thursday night at Greyhound Arena.
As a result, ENMU improved to 7-6 overall, 3-3 in LSC play.
Brandi Gomez scored nine of her 14 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Greyhounds construct a nine-point lead that held up in the end, despite Texas Woman’s drawing within a point twice in the final minute and a half.
It helped that Mikhaela Connor scored a team-high 15 points. It also helped that Eastern’s bench outscoring the Pioneers’ bench 31-3.
The Greyhounds had trailed 35-32 in the third quarter before a Shelby Jones jumper began a 12-0 Eastern run.
Kaylee Edgemon added nine points and five rebounds for ENMU. Alivia Lewis chipped in with seven points. Jones had seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Dasia Johnson doled out five assists.
Texas Woman’s Whitney Apari had a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Eastern will visit Cameron on Thursday, with a 4:30 p.m. (MST) tipoff scheduled.
