1983: Toney Anaya, 41, was sworn in as the new governor of New Mexico in Santa Fe, becoming the 23rd governor since statehood in 1912, and the 26th in succession.

Anaya pledged that as governor he would "be an activist to provide hope and opportunity for all citizens through a united New Mexico."

More than 700 guests filled the New Mexico House of Representatives chamber for the swearing-in ceremony, including former Gov. and Mrs. Bruce King, former Lt. Gov. and Mrs. Roberto Mondragon, and United States Rep.-Elect Bill Richardson.

Lt. Gov. Mike Runnels also took the oath of office during the ceremony.

1963: Newborn Dianne Jo Roby claimed the title of "Little Miss 1963" when she was the official New Year's baby for Curry County, born the day before. She and her mom, Mrs. Lonnie Roby, were featured on the front page of the Clovis News-Journal.

According to the article, Dianne's mother was "rosy-cheeked" and appeared "quite well while wearing a broad smile" after welcoming her first child at 6:33 p.m. on New Year's Day.

The new dad, Lonnie Roby, 22, and his 20-year-old wife were ranchers.

Little Dianne was all decked out in a "Sunday best diaper" for her photo shoot.
