Melrose dominates eight-man selections with 14 of 21 first-team picks

A total of 19 Curry and Roosevelt county football players were recognized Friday with 30 positions on the New Mexico High School Coaches Association all-state teams, released Friday for Eight-Man through 6A.

Leading the way was Melrose, which dominated the eight-man selections. Five players - Sterling Sena, Tristan Sena, Carson Fraze, Blake DeVaney and Jordan Jasso - accounted for 14 of the 21 first-team selections and a second-team defensive selection.

The Buffaloes have won the last four eight-man titles, and defeated every team on its schedule by at least 48 points.

Tristan Sena was named to the first team at running back, wide receiver and secondary and also picked up a second-team selection at linebacker.

DeVaney received three first-team selections for linebacker and both the offensive and defensive lines. Fraze took first-team selections for running back, defensive end and kick returner. Jasso was the first-team tight end, defensive end and kicker. Sterling Sena took first-team nods for quarterback and secondary.

For Clovis, running back Demerious Milton and offensive lineman Stevin Lindsey were both named to the second team for Class 6A.

The Class 4A team had 10 selections for Portales players, with Braden Bridges receiving selections at two positions.

Offensive lineman Isaac Gomez and punter Jose Solorzano were first-teamers on offense, while the first-team defense included defensive end Bridges, defensive lineman Romeo Gbassagee and defensive backs Tyrese Dawson and Julian Urioste.

Bridges also received a second-team nod on offense at wide receiver and was joined on the second-team offense by tight end Juan Espinoza. Linebackers Logan McDaniel and Enrique Cabral were named to the defensive second team.

Dora had four selections between three players on the eight-man team. Zac Dewbre was named as a second-team offensive lineman and second team defensive back. Other second-team selections for Dora were Hayden Skinner at secondary and Kaull Burton at kick returner.
