1977: The farm strike had come to Clovis as area farmers paraded with 21 tractors and assorted trucks and pickups throughout the city, making 10-minute stops in the parking lots of several grocery stores.

Farmers planned the event to call attention to depressed prices of farm products.

Signs on some of the participating vehicles read, "100 percent parity," "No profit — no food," and "1977 wheat, $2.40 (per bushel); 1944 wheat, $2.20."

1962: The 25 patients in the Melrose Nursing Home had enjoyed a party co-hosted by the American Legion and auxiliaries of Portales and Melrose.

Each resident received a gift from the Portales American Legion post, and the Melrose post served cookies and punch after a visit from Santa.

Patients included Carl Bailey, Mrs. Salina Buchanan, Mrs. Georgia Buster, Lee Clark, Ty Cobb, W.O. Crowder, John Defoor, Mrs. Fannie Dickerman, Mrs. Maxine Doolin, Nestor Griego, Harry Hendricks, Miss Jane Howell, Mrs. Omie McBride, Olivier McCown, Mrs. Eugenia McCoy, Mrs. Beulah Maddux, John Maxwell, Mrs. Martha Reed, George Riddle, Miss Frances Taylor, George Taylor, Mrs. Tena Taylor, George Terry, William White and Mrs. Mattie Yoachum.
