Four area students nominated to service academies

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Four eastern New Mexico students are among the 50 statewide students who have received a nomination to attend a U.S. service academy next year.

The following area students received nominations from U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M.:

• Cameron Kuykendall, Clovis, U.S. Military Academy (West Point)

• Landry Truex, Portales, U.S. Naval Academy.

• Corde Mailman, Clovis, U.S. Air Force Academy.

• Megan Edwards, Clovis, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Students receiving Udall’s nomination completed a competitive application process, which included an interview with the senator’s Military Academy Service Panels, composed of military and community leaders.

A congressional, vice-presidential, or service-connected nomination is required for admission to the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“I am excited to congratulate the New Mexico students I have nominated to the United States service academies this year,” Udall said. “These students represent New Mexico’s best and brightest, and I wish them luck as they continue with the admissions process. These exceptional students have demonstrated strong leadership in both their academic and extracurricular endeavors, as well as a commitment to serve — a true testament to their character and motivation. All of the service academies provide an excellent education that prepares students to excel in both military and civilian life. I have no doubt these students will represent New Mexico well as they continue their education and pursue a life of leadership and service.”

Kuykendall and Truex were also nominated by Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M.

“Our service academies provide exceptional education and training that prepare students for leadership roles in our armed forces as well as the skills needed to succeed after their military service,” Heinrich said. “I’m pleased to announce and congratulate this year’s nominees–these students have shown incredible initiative and I commend them on their commitment to serve our country.”

The selected students will continue to compete for admission to the respective service academies, with those admitted beginning in the summer as part of the class of 2022.

Graduates of the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the Coast Guard Academy receive commissions in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Merchant Marine, or Coast Guard, and are obligated to serve for at least five years following graduation.
