Lady Rams win Santa Fe Tournament

Clovis girls, boys win consolation games

SANTA FE — The Portales girls won Saturday’s Capital City Tournament basketball championship game over Santa Fe Indian School, 47-40. The Rams scored 18 first quarter points and held the Braves to just 10 total field goals on the day.

“We jumped out to a really big lead,” Rams coach Wade Fraze said. “But it was a challenge, because every (Braves player) can shoot, handle the ball and pass — they’re a dangerous team. They played a really tough zone and got their hands on a lot of things. We just kind of had to grind it out for the last two-and-a-half quarters.”

Portales (6-0) got the win despite going to the free throw line half as much as Santa Fe Indian did, with the Braves holding a 26-13 foul shot advantage. Indian (6-2) was held to just five points in the third quarter, giving Portales a double-digit lead to work with, heading into the fourth quarter.

In addition to winning the tournament, Portales also received the Team Sportsmanship Award. Zamorye Cox was named tournament MVP, while Kelly Fraze and Taylee Rippee also received all-tournament team honors.

Cox had eight points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals on Saturday, while Rippee led with 15 points, and Fraze added nine points of her own.

The Rams will next face West Las Vegas at home Tuesday, 5 p.m.

Clovis girls place third

RIO RANCHO — Clovis girls’ basketball team ended up quite respectable in the Rio Rancho Tournament, placing third after Saturday’s 63-30 rout of Valley.

The Lady Wildcats improved to 4-3, thanks in large part to their 22-2 first quarter.

“That’s probably the best quarter of basketball we’ve played this year,” Clovis head coach Jeff Reed said. “We played a great first quarter and great first half. ... It was over, basically, after that first quarter, and 38-12 at halftime, so it was done. I told them at halftime, ‘The score is 0-0’ I want to outscore them in the second half, too.”

Teya Morris led Clovis with 15 points. Haylee Kidd added 13 points and Madison Tolbert chipped in with 10 points.

Freshman Mikyla Harkley, a volleyball standout, came off the bench to toss in eight points. “So that was nice to see,” Reed said.

Morris and Tolbert both made all-tournament.

Clovis will host Lubbock on Tuesday, following the jayvee game, which begins at 5 p.m.

The Lady ’Cats game next Saturday against Portales has been moved from Portales to Rock Staubus Gymnasium, and will tip off after the jayvee contest, which starts at 5:30 p.m.

Clovis boys rout Centennial

ALBUQUERQUE — Dominick Urioste scored 18 points to lead Clovis’ boys basketball team to a strong finish in the Academy Tournament, as the Wildcats beat Centennial 72-40.

Jakeem Wynn added 16 points for the ’Cats, who broke a four-game losing streak and improved to 2-5.

Brandon Romero and Bryce Cabeldue added 10 points each for Clovis.
