Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Hit Portales for whilwind weekend of events

This is the kind of weekend where — if you play your cards right — you can score end-of-season veggies, eat a bratwurst for a good cause, round-up cheap reads, hear breath-taking choral and wind symphony music, nab a bike helmet and even get a free flu shot.

The farmers’ markets in Portales and Clovis are winding down their seasons — possibly faster than they’d like to, thanks to the cold blast of air that arrived Tuesday on top of an unseasonably soggy fall — but farmer market guru Margie Plummer said both plan to run until the end of this month.

Plummer said shoppers can still expect to find green chile, watermelons, sweet potatoes, winter squash, onions, apples, pears and a decent variety of other produce including — of course — pumpkins. The Portales market is at South Avenue B and West First Street at 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. The Clovis market is at the 3200 block of North Prince at 8 a.m. Saturdays and 5 p.m. Tuesdays.

Habitat for Humanity of Roosevelt and Curry Counties’ annual Oktoberfeast bratwurst fundraiser happens Friday at Portales’ First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Ave. C.

Tickets to support this nonprofit, which builds affordable housing in eastern New Mexico are $12. Besides a good feeling, that ticket buys you bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, red cabbage, green beans and dessert. They’ll be serving from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 5-7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at the church.

Don’t dawdle too long over that bratwurst Friday evening if you are a fan of choral music because the Eastern New Mexico University fall choral concert is at 7 p.m., and the 235 seats in Buchanan Hall in ENMU’s music building are hot property.

Jason Paulk, Eastern’s director of choral music, said the choirs’ motto for this semester is “Unity Through Harmony,” and Friday’s free performance by the Chamber Singers, the Swanee Singers, and the University Singers will reflect that theme.

The Friends of Clovis-Carver Public Library are holding their annual used book sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the library, 701 N. Main St. Books and other items in the Ingram Room are $1 apiece; all books in the Friends Room are a buck a bag.

Roosevelt General Hospital throws its doors open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday for its seventh annual health fair. It’s too late to take advantage of the bargain blood work, but the clinic and hospital are offering a variety of free health screenings. They’ll also fit kids for bike helmets, and administer free flu shots to the first 300 folks who roll up a sleeve and ask for one.

Cap off your weekend with a return to ENMU’s Buchanan Hall at 3 p.m. Sunday for the fall wind symphony concert under the direction of Dustin Seifert, director of bands.

Then, quick, catch your breath because the Peanut Valley Festival is only a week away.
