Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Please don’t wait to turn on lights

I always enjoy reading Audra Brown’s column about life down on the farm.

The headline on Friday’s column caught my attention and got me to thinking.

“You might wait to turn wipers on” — yes, that’s true with the mud and dust we get on the windshield. But also — don’t wait to put the lights on.

When there are times of bad visibility, such as the rain and clouds that we’re experiencing lately, it’s important to make sure it is easy for other drivers to see our vehicle.

I drive between Clovis and Portales regularly, and though many cars and trucks have their lights on in the bad weather, some do not — and they can be quite difficult to see, particularly from the rear.

I’d like to make readers aware that, even when we can see the road ahead without the lights, if there is fine rain or mist the rear of the car can be difficult for following drivers to see.

So please, put the lights on, and make sure that headlights and rear lights are in good working order, and your car or truck does not look like a motorbike with just one light working.
