RICHARDSON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s and women’s cross country teams received good rankings in a preseason Lone Star Conference poll released Thursday, especially the Eastern women’s team.
The Lady Greyhounds ranked high, tied for second with West Texas A&M, while the ENMU men ranked fourth, tied with Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Lady ’Hounds received 181 total points and also garnered three first-place votes, both numbers the same as West Texas A&M.
Midwestern State’s women topped the poll with 217 total points and 19 first-place votes, but the voters seem to anticipate them being challenged by ENMU and West Texas A&M. The three teams were the only ones to receive any first-place votes on the women’s side.
Rounding out the women’s poll were: Angelo State (99 points); Western New Mexico (80); Texas A&M-Kingsville (73); and UT Permian Basin (33).
In the men’s rankings, West Texas A&M placed first with 221 total points and 21 first-place votes.
Texas A&M-Commerce was second with 185 points and one first-place vote, followed by Tarleton State with 168 points, but no first-place votes.
Eastern’s men were next with 138 total points and one first-place vote. Texas A&M-Kingsville also had 138 points, but received two first-place votes.
Completing the men’s poll were: Angelo State (111 points); Cameron (76); UT Permian Basin (49); and Western New Mexico (39).
The league’s teams will start their season in September. The postseason — opening with the LSC Championships at Texas A&M-Kingsville — are slated to begin Oct. 21.
