Two hurt in Texico crash

TEXICO — A medical helicopter landed on the highway in Texico on Wednesday morning to transport a newspaper carrier to a Lubbock hospital after a crash involving two pickups.

Mike Spell, 64, of Texico, had broken glass in his neck and suffered broken ribs and whiplash, and was expected to be hospitalized two or three days in Lubbock, a family member said.

Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller said James Kayle Jesko, 25, of Muleshoe, was taken to the Clovis hospital for treatment of a laceration.

His family members could not immediately be reached for comment.

Waller said Spell was traveling east on Wheeler Street in a 1995 Ford pickup when he stopped to make a left-hand turn.

Jesko’s vehicle, a 2016 Dodge pickup, struck the back of Spell’s vehicle, Waller said.

Spell has been delivering Clovis-Portales newspapers for about 10 years, said Cindy Cole, circulation director for The Eastern New Mexico News. He’d just finished his deliveries and was on his way home when the wreck happened, Cole said.

The accident happened about 7:15 a.m.

The AeroCare helicopter landed on U.S. 60-70-84 after first responders established a safe landing zone away from any obstacles on the west end of town, Waller said.
