ENMU squads add players for next season

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team has signed Nick Brown, a guard from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California, to a national letter of intent.

Brown averaged around 10 point and four rebounds and just over an assist per game last season, helping the Mounties to a 17-11 record and a berth in the South Coast Conference postseason tournament after a third-place finish in the SCC North.

“Nick is truly a special player that we feel can come in and help us with our goals of winning the Lone Star Conference as well as helping us make our run at a national championship,” ENMU coach Tres Segler said. “He’s a sharpshooter from the perimeter that will force defenses in our league to respect him, and that ultimately will continue to open up the lane for his teammates.”

The Greyhounds are slated to return six players from last year’s 13-15 squad in Segler’s first campaign

Softball — The Hounds have added two players for next season in third baseman Elena Garcia of North Richland Hills, Texas, and outfielder Kayla Marshall of Albuquerque (Eldorado H.S.).

“We are so excited about these two recruits,” ENMU coach Katie Welborn said. “They each bring something to our team that I feel was a little incomplete this year. I have high hopes that they will be the missing puzzle pieces.”

ENMU finished 20-34 in 2017, its first 20-win season since 2007.

Garcia helped Birdville High School win a Class 5A state championship in Texas in 2016. She comes from the same high school as Welborn.

Marshall helped Eldorado post an 18-7 record and earn a Class 6A state tournament berth this spring. She hit .486 in her high school career with 16 triples and 90 stolen bases.

Welborn said she’s looking to pick up more talent.

“We’re looking to add a couple more players, but I feel incredibly good about where the team is right now,” she said. “I’m excited for more … players like Elena and Kayla to join the Greyhounds.”
