Woman faces six years for child abuse

CLOVIS — A Portales woman faces up to six years in prison for two counts of child abuse.

Lily Gurrola, 34, was found guilty Wednesday of using a “Tazer” stun gun on her teenage daughter and her boyfriend in January 2016, according to a press release from the office of Ninth Judicial District Attorney Andrea Reeb.

Judge Donna Mowrer presided over the half-day trial in Roosevelt County and requested a pre-sentence report from the Adult Probation Office.

That report should be completed in the next 30 days and will assist Mowrer’s sentencing decision, said Gurrola’s public defender, Evan Arendell.

“I expect there will be a sentence on this no later than the latter part of June,” he added. “I give the utmost respect to the jurors’ decision.”

Gurrola remains in custody on an unrelated matter, said Arendell.
