Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — One of Clovis High School’s most-honored seniors is being honored again — this time by Washington, D.C.
Rohan Angadi was selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar, according to releases from the U.S. Department of Education and the Clovis Municipal School District.
Included with the award are travel accomodations to the June ceremony in Washington, D.C.
“It was really exciting,” said Angadi, who found out about the award late last week. “It’s an incredible opportunity. We get to go to the White House, meet the president. Those are opportunities you cherish.”
He is one of just 159 high-school seniors selected by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars — with at least one male and female student selected from every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
The award is given to those who demonstrate leadership and scholarship, contribute to their school and community, and make outstanding accomplishments in the arts, sciences, humanities, and other fields of interest. The program was established in 1964.
Angadi is the current CHS student body president, plays tennis and soccer at CHS, tutors in math and volunteers as a youth basketball coach. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish club.
New Mexico will also represented by Faith Koh of Los Alamos High School.
Angadi was also one of five male finalists for the Wendy’s High School Heisman, which honors noteworthy student-athletes. He received a $5,000 scholarship and got to attend the Heisman Trophy presentation. One of the female Wendy’s Heisman finalists, Frelicia Tucker of South Carolina, is also a Presidential Scholar.
“Each accolade is for something different I’ve done,” Angadi said. “Presidential (Scholar) is focused on leadership, while the Wendy’s Heisman was focused on athletics. You pull different things from each award, which makes each award worth getting.”
Angadi plans to attend Yale and major in mechanical engineering.
