Rams post win in Lovington meet

April 26, 2017

LOVINGTON — The Portales High boys golfers were hardly spectacular in a stiff wind on Tuesday, but they were plenty steady enough to reach the winner’s circle.

Led by senior Thomas Tulk’s round of 82, the Rams won the Murphy/Black Invitational tournament by 14 shots over runner-up Carlsbad.

All five Rams players shot in the 80s, and that paid off with others not able to manage the wind. Tulk finished third individually, while sophomore Talon Payne tied for fourth at 83.

“They did well today,” Rams coach Matt Hunton said of his squad. “That wind is so physically and mentally exhausting. To shoot what they did today is really good.”

It was the third team title this season for Portales, which also won earlier tournaments at Ruidoso and Clovis.

Artesia’s Jake Craft earned medalist honors with a 78, three shots ahead of Hobbs’ Tyler Cox.

Meantime, junior Janae Hale was the girls medalist, shooting an 84, and the Lady Rams finished third in a seven-team field at 401, one shot ahead of host Lovington.

Artesia took team honors at 365, with Hobbs second at 372. Texico came in sixth with a score of 431.

Hale outlasted Lovington’s Kathryn Campbell by three shots. It was her third medalist title of the spring.

Leading the way for Texico was senior Hannah Rucker with a round of 95.

Portales squads are back in action on Friday in the Last Chance tourney at New Mexico Military in Roswell. Both PHS teams and the Texico girls travel to The Links at Sierra Blanca at Ruidoso on Monday for the District 4/1-4A tournament.
