ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High’s girls pulled off a bit of an upset on Monday, winning the District 2-6A golf tournament at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course.
Sophomore Logan Clayton and junior Raquel Anaya posted the day’s top two scores at 85 and 86, respectively, and the Lady Wildcats finished at 365 to 379 for Eldorado and 382 for La Cueva. The other three schools did not have full squads.
“You’ve got to call it an upset,” Lady Cats coach Steve Speck said. “La Cueva was second in the state (in Class 6A) last year.”
Meantime, the CHS boys finished a solid second at 316, well behind the prohibitive favorite in 6A, La Cueva, which shot 295.
“We were playing for second (place) when we got here,” interim Wildcats coach Dale Fullerton said.
For the Lady Cats, it was their second district title in a row, having won the then-4-6A title last year against Hobbs and Carlsbad.
Clayton and Anaya led the way.
“They both did really good; I’m proud of them,” Speck said. “Coming in, this course was a little tougher than what we’re used to, a little longer.”
On the boys’ side, La Cueva had the day’s top two scores, with the Bears’ Sebastian Vasquez beating teammate Connor Allen after both shot 2-under 70s.
Junior David Maldonado finished fourth individually with a 76 while sophomore Kolt Bennett followed in fifth at 77. Ribbons were awarded to the top nine finishers, and Cats junior Dakota York was ninth at 77.
“David and Kolt both played real well,” Fullerton said. “This is a tough course to put on.”
Fullerton added that junior Christian Fontanilla battled back for a respectable round of 83 after shooting a 39 on his front nine.
Clovis squads are slated to return to action on Wednesday in the Eagle Invite at Hobbs. That will be their final outing before Class 6A state competition May 8-9 at Spring River Golf Course in Roswell.
