1967: A Clovis High School football star was recovering after his heart stopped during surgery to repair a broken nose.
Wayne Hallmark suffered the broken nose when a calf kicked him as he fed the animal on his family's ranch.
Surgery to repair the nose went as planned, but family members said the 18-year-old student's heart stopped as a reaction to anesthesia. He was in a coma for five days before recovering.
"I'm tickled to death with his improvement," Delmar Hallmark said of his son. "He is conscious now and recognizes everyone who comes in the room."
Wayne Hallmark, a linebacker for the Clovis Wildcats, was the only unanimous choice on United Press International's All-State team in the fall.
He went on to play college football at Oklahoma State University.
