MORIARTY — A change of scenery didn’t hurt the Portales High softball team a whole lot on Thursday.
With Wheeler Park still too wet to play after Wednesday’s rains, the Lady Rams and Moriarty switched home dates and the Lady Pintos hosted these games. The teams will now play a doubleheader in Portales on April 29.
Portales (8-6, 2-0) faced early deficits in both, but rallied for identical 12-8 victories.
“I’m proud of the girls,” PHS coach Robbie Crowley said. “It seems they each have their roles change every day, but they just keep going along.”
Sophomore Aymri Chavez earned the win in the circle in the opener. She was relieved by freshman Madi Purcell in the fourth inning of the nightcap, and Purcell earned that win by holding the Lady Pintos (9-7, 0-3) scoreless until allowing two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Lady Rams survived a bushel of errors in the twinbill — seven in each game, to be exact.
Chavez also led the team at the plate in the first game, going 3-for-5, while Micaela Garcia drove in three runs with a single and a two-run homer.
In the second game, Sarah Lovato went 4-for-6, giving her a 6-for-10 day in the doubleheader. Sky Marianito, Kimberlie Hay and Rocky Moreno all had three hits as the Lady Rams outhit Moriarty 19-9.
Marianito had two hits in the opener and finished the day 5-for-10.
Portales’ next outing is in a district twinbill at Ruidoso on Tuesday.
