Rams fall to Ruidoso in 4-4A opener

RUIDOSO — The Portales High baseball team had its eight-game win streak snapped on Friday afternoon, dropping its District 4-4A opener against Ruidoso 4-3.

Emilio Lovato, despite allowing only one earned run while striking out seven batters, was saddled with the loss for Portales (8-3). Three of the Warriors runs came as the result of three errors by the Rams.

Meantime, the Rams were limited to just four hits, well below their average over the past week. Ruidoso (6-6) didn’t fair much better, recording only six hits during the contest.

Portales took an early 2-0 lead, carrying the margin into the bottom of the third when the Warriors finally got on the board with a single run. Portales added to their total in the fifth, but would be answered by two runs in the bottom of the inning by Ruidoso to tie the game at 3-3.

After two scoreless innings for Portales, the Warriors recorded the winning run, staving off extra innings and getting the win.

The teams are back at it with an 11 a.m. doubleheader today.

Portales then begins a five-game stretch at home with a 5 p.m. contest on Tuesday against Lovington.
