ENMU ROUNDUP: Track teams get provisional qualifiers

ARLINGTON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University’s track squads posted four NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks on Saturday in the Bobby Lane Invitatational, hosted by Texas-Arlington.

For the women, freshman Melina Gryschka won the 5,000 in a time of 16 minutes, 54.89 seconds, nearly a minute ahead of runnerup Leah Lewis of Dallas Baptist. The Greyhounds also scored in the 400 as another freshman, Mason Swanson, placed fourth with a time of 1:00.68.

Meantime, the Greyhounds had three provisional qualifiers on the men’s side, including the 400 relay team of Jacques Hall, Avery Rasher, Julian Coronado and Travonne Armstead placing third in a time of 40.70. Meantime, junior Kenneth Lloyd made it in high jump, placing second in 6-8 3/4, and sophomore Gus Swanson took second in the 400 hurdles in 53.29.

Rasher was sixth in the 400 at 48.88, and Tito Chaidez placed sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase at 10:10.93.

ENMU tracksters return to action this week in the Texas Relays at Austin from Thursday through Saturday and in the Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, on Saturday.

Rodeo — At Ranger, Texas, ENMU’s men scored 245 points to share seventh place with Odessa College in a weekend rodeo hosted by Ranger College.

Jacob Lewis paced the Hounds, splitting second and third in saddle bronc riding to account for 135 of the team’s points. He split second and third in the first go, short round and average.

Luke Hisel and Brandon Muniz posted a third-place finish in team roping for another 80 points.

Western Texas College won the men’s team title with 390 points, outlasting Weatherford College (380).

On the women’s side, ENMU did not score. Laney Elkins was second in the first round of goat tying, while Tawny Barry and Casey Kamm split 10th in the first go.

Texas Tech took women’s team honors with 180 points, followed by Odessa with 165 and Tarleton State with 150.

ENMU rodeo squads are back in action this weekend, beginning on Thursday, at Snyder, Texas, in a rodeo hosted by Western Texas College.
