Prince Street work expected to be quick

CLOVIS — Thursday travelers on Prince Street may have received a small surprise, in the form of road work between 21st Street and Llano Estacado Boulevard.

The repaving project, however, isn't expected to take long.

The job, New Mexico Department of Transportation District 2 spokesperson Manon Arnett said, is a small milling operation that should be done today, with the paving process to happen next week.

Money was allocated for the project this week, Arnett said, and the portion of NM 209 (Prince) was judged to need immediate repair.

Clovis city officials said they weren't informed the project got the go-ahead until late Wednesday afternoon, and sent out a news release at 4:29 p.m. Wednesday. Questions regarding the late notification were not addressed by the DOT.

Disruption to traffic appeared light Thursday afternoon, and businesses on Prince Street appeared unaffected on the project's first day.

Burns Hardware owner James Burns said he wasn't aware work was under way until a reporter asked him about it in the afternoon.

Throughout the project, crews will work on one northbound lane and one southbound lane to ensure the road remains open, but detours may be required for business access, Arnett said.

Project updates are available at nmroads.com, and drivers are asked to reduce speed and watch for any signage specific to the work.
