1977: Bill Franks had been named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the De Baca County Chamber of Commerce.

Franks, 74, was a member of the Fort Sumner city council and a former mayor and a "civicly active community leader," the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Former New Mexico Gov. Bruce King was the chamber's guest speaker.

1972: A teenage girl had been shot following a junior high school basketball game.

Janet Jones, 15, of 1409 Reid in Clovis, was shot in the cheek and lost several teeth. She was hospitalized in good condition.

Police said shots were fired following a "flareup" between Clovis and Roswell students.

Jones was not involved in the incident, but was walking nearby, police said.
