1971: Much of the region saw the first snow flakes of the season.
Early risers in Clovis, Muleshoe, Fort Sumner, Grady and Melrose all reported snow between 6 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
“By 8 a.m., the frozen precipitation had ceased and disappeared without a trace in most areas,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.
1956: Clovis city commission was offering $100 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of local vandals, but incidents continued throughout the city and the reward remained unclaimed.
Most recently, Bessie Decker of 212 E. Fifth St. reported gas had been siphoned out of her car, which was parked at her home.
Gaytha Bruce of 1910 Axtell also reported someone had pushed over a monument valued at $800 at the Clovis Monument company at 209 W. Grand.
1951: Brig. Gen. Joe C. Moffitt had taken command of the Clovis Air Force Base as men from the 140th Fighter Bomber Wing began to arrive.
Maj. Edward Brown Jr., who had been base commander during the reactivation period, had been named executive officer of the air base group.
The 140th Wing was an Air National Guard unit from Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. All members were expected to be in Clovis by Dec. 5.
The unit flew the F-51 Mustangs, which were being used in much of the Korean air action, the Clovis News-Journal reported.
