Helping others important to student councilor

Editor’s note: This is one in a series profiling local Roosevelt County students each week.

Alexis Nixon, 11 is a sixth grade student at Lindsey-Steiner Elementary School.

Her favorite subject is math, and she participates in both band and student council.

She plays trumpet in band and likes it, because she gets “to make loud noises.”

Nixon’s participation in student council is important to her, because it allows her to help others.

“I get to help people and be leaders of the school, and we help raise money for lots of families. It’s fun to help other people,” she said.

What is your favorite part of being in school?

Probably learning everything new.

What is the most interesting thing you've learned in school?

The Euclid method, probably. It’s how you figure out the greatest common factor of things. You have to divide until you get zero out. It’s fun.

What is your least favorite part of school?

Probably being at Thanksgiving break so long, because I like school a lot.

What has been the biggest lesson you've learned in school?

“Honesty is the best policy,” probably. This kid, he got in trouble, and then he lied about it, and he got detention for longer than he would have gotten if he would have told the truth. It showed me that, if I be honest, they’ll be less stern on you.

Who has been your favorite teacher and why?

Probably Mr. Ortega in second grade, because in first grade I couldn’t read, and I almost didn’t pass, and as soon as I got to second grade, I could read chapter books.

What do you think you want to do when you get older? How did you find that out?

I want to be a pediatrician. I like taking care of people, and I like children. I don’t know why. I just want to be with them all the time.
