SILVER CITY — Senior outside hitter Courtney Lawson had just seven kills on Tuesday night, but three of them came late in Game 4 and helped Eastern New Mexico University get past Western New Mexico 25-23, 25-18, 15-25, 26-24 in Lone Star Conference volleyball on Tuesday.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Frey had 23 kills for the Greyhounds (17-11, 12-6 LSC), who won for the sixth time in seven matches. Junior middle blocker Brooklyn Biel added 13 kills and three blocks (two solos), while junior setter Alexis Aguirre had 35 assists and junior libero Andrea Aguilar collected 17 digs.
Aguirre just missed a double-double, finishing with nine digs.
Junior middle blocker Heather Verrill led the Mustangs (16-13, 8-10), in their first season in the LSC, with 13 blocks.
ENMU bounced back after getting thumped in the third set. Lawson had back-to-back kills to push the Hounds in front 18-14, then got another after the Mustangs rallied back to tie it 24-24.
WNMU then had an attack error on match point.
The Hounds, who could finish anywhere from third to fifth in seeding for next week’s LSC tournament at San Angelo, Texas, close out the regular season this weekend at Greyhound Arena against regular-season champion Angelo State on Friday and second-place Tarleton State on Saturday. Both matches are set for 6 p.m.
