AREA PREP FOOTBALL: Farwell, Bovina to meet for district title

Staff report

MORTON — Bovina and Farwell set up what amounts to a winner-take-all showdown this week for the District 3-2A Division II football championship at Farwell with lopsided road victories on Friday.

Bovina stayed unbeaten for the season by blanking Morton 54-0, while the Steers won at Springlake-Earth 47-10. The teams meet at 7:30 p.m. (CDT) on Friday at Farwell in the second-to-last game of the regular season.

Jaden Quintana was involved in a variety of scoring plays for the Mustangs at Morton. He tallied on a 74-yard punt return in the second quarter, an 84-yard return of the second-half kickoff and a 50-yard pass from quarterback David Lara in the third period, and also threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Andres Loera later in the third.

The Mustangs (7-0, 3-0) had a 15-5 edge over the Indians (0-8, 0-3) in first downs and outgained Morton 414-82. Lara finished 10-of-19 for 164 yards and two TDs, while Edgar OIvera rushed for 69 yards and a pair of scores.

Meantime, junior running backs Miguel Vasquez and Jeremiah Smith each rushed for more than 140 yards and combined for six touchdowns — four by Vasquez — as the Steers (7-1, 3-0) cruised to victory.

Farwell posted a 24-8 margin in first downs at Springlake-Earth (3-5, 1-2) and racked up 589 total yards — 496 rushing — to 181 for the Wolverines.

Smith carried just eight times for 145 yards, while Vasquez gained 143 yards on nine totes.

Senior QB Michael DeLeon rushed for 145 yards and threw a 17-yard scoring pass to junior Daniel Lopez for Springlake-Earth’s lone touchdown.

Muleshoe 54, Friona 7 — At Muleshoe, the Mules bounced back from a loss last week at Amarillo River Road as senior quarterback Beto Diaz went 18-for-22 for 368 yards passing and six touchdowns in a District 1-3A Division I matchup.

Senior Jason Florez grabbed two of the scoring passes from Diaz and finished with four catches for 138 yards. Altogether, 10 players caught at least one pass for the Mules (5-3, 2-1 district).

Meantime, Muleshoe had a 25-11 advantage in first downs and held the Chieftains (3-5, 0-3) to 170 total yards.

Texico 28, Raton 16 — At Raton, senior Mason Golden rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns, two coming in the final five minutes as the Wolverines rallied past Raton in District 5-3A.

The Wolverines (2-5, 2-0 district) appear to be in control of the district race, with games left at Tucumcari this week and at home against Clayton on Nov. 4. Texico, ranked fifth in Class 3A, has lost to three of the teams ahead of it.

Golden’s go-ahead TD, making it 20-16, came on a 3-yard run after Texico’s Isaac Ortiz forced a fumble recovered by the Wolverines’ Jose Posada at the Raton 22. Texico then stopped the Tigers on downs in Raton territory, and Golden iced it on a 1-yard TD run with about a minute left.

Golden scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter, but Raton (5-4, 1-2) got both of its TDs on runs by QB Dustin Segura to lead 16-8 at halftime. The Wolverines pulled with 16-14 on a 29-yard scoring pass from Lance Myers to Cayd Bilbery in the third period.

Dora 60, Logan 8 — At Logan, the Coyotes returned to the .500 mark, outscoring the Longhorns 52-0 over the final three quarters in an 8-man District 4 game.

Dylan Roberts led the Coyotes with 125 yards on six carries and three touchdowns. Hayden Skinner followed with 120 yards on 17 carries as well as 27 passing yards with one touchdown on the ground and one through the air.

Kaull Burton added 83 rushing yards and two touchdowns on six carries and Aaron Jasso was the recipient of the 27 yard touchdown pass and added a 48-yard kickoff return for a TD for good measure.
