Clovis man dies from self-inflicted gunshot to head

Staff report

A 22-year-old Clovis man who shot himself in the head outside a Portales business on Tuesday, died on Wednesday, friends said.

The man was airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock. Police said they did not know his condition, but his Facebook page was filled with condolences from family and friends who said he died on Wednesday afternoon.

Portales Police Public Information Officer Charlie Smart said police responded to a report of shots fired at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of West Second Street.

The man was shot inside a vehicle in a parking lot, officials said.

“Based on witness statements and scene processing, it was determined that the wound was self-inflicted,” Smart said. “At this point, we don’t have any reason to think otherwise.”
