Mustangs turn back Hounds

Staff report

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State outshot Eastern New Mexico University for the match, but the Mustangs had just enough offense to hold on for a 2-1 Lone Star Conference soccer victory over the Greyhounds.

Junior forward Destinee Williamson scored with just under six minutes left for a 2-0 MSU lead, and the goal turned out to be necessary when the Hounds (3-7-1, 2-4-0 LSC) got a goal from freshman Anniah Galdean with just four seconds left in the match.

The Mustangs (7-3-2, 4-2-0) broke a scoreless tie when freshman forward Hannah Mattinson punched in her fifth goal of the season in the 34th minute. ENMU narrowly missed taking the lead moments earlier when Galdean’s shot caromed off the crossbar.

MSU had a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal, with junior goalkeeper Marissa Torres helping keep the Hounds in it with 10 saves.

ENMU returns to action with a 6 p.m. (MDT) LSC match on Friday at Angelo State.
