Prep roundup: Mules topple Idalou

MULESHOE — Senior quarterback Beto Diaz completed 20-of-23 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns and Muleshoe posted a 31-9 victory over Idalou on Friday night.

Diaz threw scoring tosses of 9 and 24 yards to senior wide receiver Jason Florez in the second quarter, and 15 yards to senior Tre Villa and 21 yards to senior Mario Flores in the third stanza as the Mules (3-2) took control of the game. Senior Javy Perez scored on 17-yard run early in the opening quarter for the game’s first points.

Muleshoe outgained the Wildcats 490-223 for the game. All the scoring for Idalou (2-3) came on field goals of 30, 39 and 39 yards by junior Landon Reeves.

Fort Sumner 48, Tucumcari 7 — At Fort Sumner, the Foxes pulled away from the winless Rattlers after the teams played to a 7-7 tie at the quarter.

Sophomore quarterback Jude Segura threw for four touchdowns and ran for one as the Foxes (5-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, opened a 27-7 lead by the half.

Freshman running back Francisco Chavez put Fort Sumner on the board midway through the first quarter with a 2-yard run, and finished with 152 yards on 20 carries. Meantime, Segura’s TD tosses were for 15 and 22 yards to senior Hunter Sparks, 14 yards to sophomore Noah Maxwell and 2 yards to Brant West.

Segura scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter, while Daniel Madero’s 18-yard TD run with just under a minute left finished the scoring. Junior Kreston Butterfield went 6-for-7 on PAT kicks.

The Rattlers (0-5) pulled even late in the first quarter on a 46-yard TD run by senior Michael Shelton.
