ENMU ROUNDUP: Mustangs outlast Hounds in 5

Midwestern State rallied from a pair of one-game deficits on Friday night to outlast Eastern New Mexico University 21-25, 25-20, 14-25, 25-20, 15-12 in Lone Star Conference volleyball at Greyhound Arena.

Erin Richburg posted a double-double for the Mustangs (7-5, 3-1 LSC) with 11 kills and 10 digs. The Hounds (5-7, 0-2) were led by 16 kills from senior Lauren Frye, 13 kills and nine digs from senior outside hitter Courtney Lawson and 14 kills from junior middle blocker Brooklyn Biel.

ENMU took a 2-1 lead with a dominating performance in the third set, taking the lead for good 7-6 on Biel’s kill which touched off a 4-0 run. The Hounds went on a 5-1 surge, fueled by Lawson and freshman Jennifer Lopez for a 21-16 advantage and MSU never got closer than four points the rest of the set.

In Game 4, the Mustangs took control with a 6-0 run to lead 15-10, with the last four points coming on ENMU errors. The Hounds pulled to within a point twice on kills by Frye and Biel, but the Mustangs used a service ace by Meghan Bettis and a kill by Kiley Beaver on match point to clinch the victory.

Junior Alexis Aguirre (33) and sophomore Kaitlyn Kluna (22) combined for 55 assists from the setter position for ENMU. Senor Talaitupu Faumui had a match-high 19 kills.

The Hounds are back in action at 6 p.m. today when they host Cameron in another LSC matchup.

Women’s soccer — At Commerce, Texas, the Hounds were dominated statistically and dropped a 2-0 decision to Texas A&M-Commerce in the LSC opener for both teams.

The Lions (4-2-0) outshot the Hounds 31-4, including 13-2 on goal, and had a 13-2 margin in corner kicks as well.

Commerce broke through in the 32nd minute when Anitra Wright pumped in a long shot from the left side, beating ENMU goalkeeper Marissa Torres. Commerce picked up an insurance goal toward the end of the half when Savannah Grasser took a punt from Torres, settled the ball and fired it into the net from about 23 yards out.

ENMU returns to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. (MDT) conference match against Texas Woman’s at Denton, Texas.
