New Mexico fishing report — Aug. 9

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and New Mexico Department of Game & Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, senkos, salt craws, curly tail grubs and worms for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using bottom bouncer rigs and crank baits. We had no other reports.

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 1,110 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake — Fishing was fair to good using top water lures, jerk baits, jointed Rapalas and spoons for tiger muskies. Fishing was slow to fair using crayfish, liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no other reports.

Brazos River — Fishing was fair to good using bead-head, hare’s ear nymphs and small copper John Barrs for trout.

Canjilon Lakes — Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees. The lakes will not reopen in 2016.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 514 cfs and 450 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair to good using prince nymphs, hares ears, night crawlers, PowerBait and salmon eggs for cutthroat, brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair using worms, night crawlers, PowerBait and dark wooly buggers for rainbow trout.

Cochiti Lake — Fishing was fair using top water lures, tubes and jigs for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and crappie. Fishing was fair using Fisher Chick spinners, crank baits, curly tail grubs and jerk baits for white bass and crappie. Fishing was fair to good using cut bait, shrimp and liver on trout lines and rod and reel for catfish.

El Vado Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Fenton Lake — Trout fishing was slow.

Heron Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. There were a few rainbow trout and kokanee caught by anglers using PowerBait, Gulp eggs and Double Whammies tipped with corn. The best bank fishing was reported by anglers fishing in the Ridge Rock area.

Jackson Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 16 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was slow. Fishing on the upper Cebolla was fair to good using using small dark emergers, hoppers, copper John Barrs and worms for rainbow trout. The upper reaches of the East Fork on the Valles Caldera has been fishing well for anglers using small hoppers and beetles. We had no reports on other streams in the area.

Laguna Del Campo — Trout fishing was slow.

Lake Farmington — We had no reports from anglers this week. Nonmotorized watercraft are now allowed on Lake Farmington. Fees are $50 for the season or $5 daily.

Manzano Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Navajo Lake — Fishing was fair to good using curly tail grubs, tubes, creature baits, sweet beavers, minnows, crank baits and spinners for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using worms for perch. Crappie fishing was fair using small curly tail grubs and minnows. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and swim baits for northern pike. Fishing was fair trolling Cripplures, Arnies, Kokanee Killers and Double Whammies tipped with corn behind dodgers and beer cans for kokanee. The kokanee were scattered with catches reported at 20 feet, 50 feet and 80 to 100 feet depths.

San Gregorio Lake — Fishing was slow.

San Juan River — Stream flow as of Monday morning was 408 cfs. Fishing through the quality waters section was good using dead chickens, parachute Adams, small bead-head, pheasant tail nymphs, foam wing emergers, scintillas, crystal flash midges. Good midge hatches were coming off in the late afternoon and evening hours. Fishing through the bait section was good using spinners, night crawlers, small dry flies, jerk baits, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Seven Springs Brood Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms, assorted nymphs and small spoons for trout.

Tingley Beach — Fishing at the Central and Youth Ponds was fair to good using shrimp, hot dogs, dough bait and liver for catfish. Fishing for bluegill was slow to fair using worms and dough bait. Fishing for all other species was slow. We had no reports from the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond.

Trout Lakes — Fishing was good using worms, PowerBait, gold spinners and Pistol Petes for trout.

Northeast

Charette Lakes — Fishing was slow.

Clayton Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait, worms and spinners for trout. A few small catfish have been caught by anglers using worms. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Cimarron River — Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 15 cfs. Fishing was good using Trico spinners, micro mays, San Juan worms, bead-head, hare’s ear nymphs, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was fair to good using top water lures, worms, senkos, tubes and curly tail grubs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, minnows and curly tail grubs for white bass. Night fishing was good using shrimp, liver and cut bait for catfish. The surface water temp was in the high 70s.

Cowles Ponds — Fishing was good using small spoons, worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Coyote Creek — Fishing was good using worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Eagle Rock Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait for rainbow trout. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Trolling for kokanee was slow with just a few caught by anglers using Panther Martins, Arnies, Kokanee Killers and Double Whammies tipped with corn or PowerBait. Fishing was fair using crank baits, spinners and streamers for northern pike in the 15 to 18-inch range.

Gallinas River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake — Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, marshmallow and salmon egg combinations, PowerBait and small nymphs.

Lake Alice — Fishing was fair using PowerBait, salmon eggs and homemade dough bait for trout.

Lake Maloya — Fishing was good using PowerBait, garlic cheese, marshmallow salmon egg combinations, Gulp eggs, Pistol Petes and Kastmasters for trout. The best reports are coming from anglers fishing early in the morning and late in the day.

Los Pinos River — Fishing was good using prince nymphs, hoppers, parachute Adams, Panther Martins, Fisher Chick spinners, salmon eggs and worms for trout.

Maxwell Lake 13 — Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Morphy Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Pecos River — Stream flow on Monday was 67 cfs. Trout fishing was good using hoppers, prince nymphs, San Juan worms, bead-head, hare’s ear nymphs, Panther Martin spinners, PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms.

Red River — Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 64 cfs. Fishing on the main river and on the Forks was good using elk hair caddis, royal Wulffs, copper John Barrs, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Red River City Ponds — Fishing was fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Rio Costilla — Stream flow near Costilla on Monday morning was 77 cfs. Fishing was good using elk hair caddis, small hopper patterns, bead-head, hare’s ear nymphs and copper John Barrs for trout.

Rio Grande — Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 277 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using poundmeisters, bead-head, hare’s ear nymphs, copper John Barrs, Kastmasters, spinners, PowerBait and worms for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using streamers and small jerk baits for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 38 cfs. Fishing was good using elk hair caddis, hoppers, parachute Adams and poundmeisters for trout.

Rio Pueblo — Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 13 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using dry dropper combinations for trout.

Santa Barbara River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir — Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using spinners and PowerBait.

Shuree Ponds — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Stubblefield Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake — Fishing was fair to good using senkos, tubes, drop shot rigs, spinner baits and top water lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was very good using stink bait, cut bait and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was fair using jigs, deep diving crank baits and curly tail grubs for white bass. Fishing was very good using worms and grubs for bluegill. Anglers using drop shot rigs for bass reported catching several large bluegill. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the high 70s.

Winsor Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond — Fishing was fair using shrimp, crawdads and hot dogs for catfish.

Bear Canyon Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using worms under a bobber for bluegill. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Caballo Lake — Fishing continued to be slow for all species with light fishing pressure.

Elephant Butte Lake — Fishing was fair using minnows, crank baits and curly tail grubs for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using tubes, senkos, creature baits, crank baits, top water lures and small plastics on drop shot rigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Night fishing was very good using dough bait, chicken liver, crawdads and shrimp for catfish. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the low 80s.

Escondida Lake — Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver, shrimp and hot dogs for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Gila River — Stream flow as of Monday morning was 97 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout.

Lake Roberts — Fishing was fair using chicken liver for catfish. Fishing for trout was slow for some but good for others as a few limits were caught by anglers using worms. Fishing for bass was slow but a few were caught by anglers using crank baits and Bang Tail spinners.

Percha Dam — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande — Stream flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday morning was 1,290 cfs. Fishing was good using beef liver, chicken liver, hot dogs and shrimp for catfish. We had no other reports.

Snow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond — Fishing was slow for all species.

Southeast

Alto Lake — Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using hot dogs and liver.

Bataan Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 27 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was good using night crawlers, hot dogs and liver for catfish.

Bonito Lake — Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake — Fishing was fair to good using liver, shrimp and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Bottomless Lakes — Fishing was slow for all species.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was very good using tubes, Big Ned rigs, worms, senkos and creature baits for largemouth bass. Fishing was very good using crank baits, jerk baits, spinners, tubes and grubs for white bass.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Rito Creek — Fishing was good using wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, worms and PowerBait for trout. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Eunice Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, chicken liver and dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

Greene Acres Lake — Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using hot dogs and liver.

Grindstone Reservoir — Fishing pressure was light and fishing was slow.

Jal Lake — Fishing was good using garlic cheese and worms for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Lake Van — Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs and chicken liver for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing was good in the late evening hours using cut bait and blood baits for catfish up to 7 pounds. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake as of Monday morning was 114 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Perch Lake — Fishing was fair using liver, hot dogs and shrimp for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 7.9 cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake — Fishing was fair using tubes, jigs, chigger craws, curly tail grubs, top water lures and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver, cut bait and shrimp for catfish. We had no other reports.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was fair using tubes, senkos, sweet beavers, salt craws and top water lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing for walleye was slow with just a few caught by anglers using grubs, minnows, jigs and night crawlers. Fishing was fair using shrimp, night crawlers, chicken liver and beef liver for catfish.
