Borden: Embroidery decoupage on coming show

Information on making double slider cards and using Paintstiks to embellish garments will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.)

Creative Living

Diane Tunnell is an Independent Demonstrator with Stampin’ Up!, and she’s going to demonstrate how to make a double slider card, focusing on cutting the pieces needed and then gluing it together. She lives in Clovis.

Laura Murray is a quilter, author and designer, and her business is Laura Murray Designs in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She’s going to demonstrate how to use Paintstiks to embellish a variety of ready-made garments.

Information on embroidery decoupage, restoring wooden floors and planning events will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at noon and on Saturday at 2 p.m.

If you've tried machine embroidery, but have trouble with placement, then embroidery decoupage may be the answer. Patsy Shields will demonstrate this method which gives you much more control. She represents RNK Distributing and Floriani Stabilizers and lives in Sellersburg, Indiana.

Bruce Johnson will show how to turn back the clock and restore a lifeless wooden floor to its former beauty in no time. He represents Minwax in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.

Patty Waid is an event planner, and she will tell how to plan an event from start to finish. This particular event uses a western theme — but the ideas will work for any themed event. Her business is Waid and Associates, and she’s from Albuquerque.

Double slider cards

Cut the pieces:

Begin with an 8 1/2" X 11" piece of heavy duty cardstock.

• Along the 11" side, cut at 5 1/2". Use one of the 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" pieces for the card base. Score this piece along the 8 1/2" side at 4 1/4".

• Use the other 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" piece for the slider mechanism. Cut along the 8 1/2 side at 4". Trim 1/4 off the 4” wide piece to make a rectangle that is 4" X 5 1/4". Cut the remaining piece of cardstock at 2 3/4" along the 5 1/2" side.

• Cut a 1/4" strip from either end of the slider (the 4" X 5 1/4" piece) that is 3/8" from the sides.

• Cut a strip from a cellophane bag that is 3” wide x at least 11” long.

Build the card:

Wrap the cellophane around the slider mechanism and adhere together using Tear & Tape Adhesive. Cellophane should be loose enough to slide freely yet snug enough to stay in place. Do not allow any adhesive to get on the cardstock. The cellophane must be able to move. Trim excess cellophane. Using the two 2 3/4” X 4 1/2” pieces of cardstock and your choice of 2 1/2” X 4 1/4” layers to design the sliders. Keep in mind one will slide up and one will slide down when decorating these. Do not have too many layers as these will need to slide inside the card base.

Adhere the two sliders to the cellophane only of the slider mechanism. Place the slider that will slide up on top with Tear & Tape Adhesive on back along the bottom of the piece. The slider that will slide down is glued to the back of the mechanism with the stamped side toward the mechanism so that it will show when the card is open.

When scoring the card base at 4 1/4”, also make a small mark at 2 1/8”. Use this mark to punch a small half circle or half oval. Glue the slider inside the card base, keep glue on cardstock only, not on the cellophane. The half circle punch should be the bottom front of the card. Punch a small hole on the bottom slider for ribbon or string. Decorate card front as desired.
