1961: The Chamber of Commerce in Muleshoe issued a statement confirming there were working mules about.

“There are two mules working and making their home in the beautiful city of Muleshoe,” the statement read.

“These two outstanding specimens ... are known as Pete and Jack. They are the proud possession of Dave Anders, who daily uses these noble animals in his work of landscaping and tree trimming.”

The statement was issued as part of a publicity campaign to build a national monument to the mules that helped build Texas.

The National Mule Memorial was dedicated on July 3, 1965, and still stands on U.S. 84 at the north end of Muleshoe’s Main Street.

Anders’ “Old Pete,” an 18-year-old, 1,100-pound mule, was used as the model for the fiberglass memorial sculpted by Kevin Wolf of Aurora, Colorado.

1956: A “large crowd” had been in attendance at the Clovis High School senior class play, “You Can’t Take it With You,” according to the Clovis News-Journal.

Actors included Kay Murphy, Joan Kay Dixon, Susie Moore, Bobby Dugan, Dallas Blevins, Owen Russell and Peggy Tinker.

1951: Authorities were investigating the circumstances that led to a car in a tree below the Caprock.

A 1946-model car, reported stolen in Hereford, had been located “some 100 yards down the hill from the crest of the Caprock” north of Rosedale, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Officials theorized the car had been pushed down the hill with no one inside.
