SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State completed a 7-0 season series sweep of Lone Star Conference Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday with 7-0 and 13-3 wins over the Greyhounds.
The Rams (23-14, 16-7 LSC) outscored ENMU 72-12 overall and shut the Greyhounds out three times.
ENMU (10-27, 3-20) scored only in the fourth inning of the second game on Saturday, breaking up a 31-inning scoreless streak against the Rams. Down 9-0, Marcus Martinez hit an RBI double and the other runs scored on fielder’s choices.
ASU pounded out 14 hits in the game, led by shortstop Tyler Coolbaugh with 3-for-4. The contest was called in the bottom of the eighth due to the 10-run rule.
Four ASU pitchers combined to limit the Greyhounds to eight hits.
Angelo State 7, ENMU 0, 1st game — The Rams notched their third consecutive shutout over ENMU, breaking the game open with a four-run fourth against freshman left-hander Alec Lemmon (2-3) for a 5-0 lead.
Lemmon hit the Rams’ Steven Pinales with a pitch to start the fourth, and he went t o third on a single by Jarryd Klemm.
Jay Gonzales followed with an RBI single, then after a double steal Tyler Coolbaugh hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Matt Waller bunted for a hit, sending Gonzales to third before Nathan Ruane hit an RBI fielder’s choice.
The Rams added their final two runs in the sixth inning off reliever Chris Miranda-Carr when Ruane reached on a throwing error by ENMU third baseman Charles Sandberg Jr. and came all the way around. Pinales later drove in Paxton DeLaGarza with another fielder’s choice.
Bryce Zak (7-1) cruised to the victory, striking out 24 and walking just one. He gave up only a third-inning single by Chris Padilla and a fourth-inning double by shortstop Tregra Williams.
The latter hit put two men in scoring position for ENMU, but Zak escaped by striking out Dylan Nault and Marcus Martinez, both swinging. He went on to retire the final 11 ENMU hitters.
The Hounds return home to host a three-game LSC next weekend against Tarleton State, beginning with a 6 p.m. single game on Friday.
