LOVINGTON — Seniors Haley Westfall and Gisela Aburto hit two-out, two-run homers in the second inning and Clovis High’s softball team opened its season on Tuesday with an 8-2 victory over Lovington.
Sophomore Celeste Chavez pitched a complete-game win for the Lady Wildcats despite allowing 11 hits and five walks. Only one of Lovington’s runs was earned, and Chavez recorded four strikeouts.
“We just played really good,” CHS coach Freddy Perez said. “Celeste wasn’t at her best, but she got key outs for us.”
Clovis also finished with 11 hits in the contest, with Chavez aiding her cause by going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Meantime, Westfall went 3-for-3 and also had a double, while senior Mariah Chavez finished 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Clovis also won the junior varsity game 11-1.
The Lady Cats return to action on Saturday in their home opener at Lady Wildcat Field. They will host Sandia in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
