CLASS 1A GIRLS: Top seeds Elida, Grady advance

ELIDA — The top-seeded host and five-time defending state champion Elida Lady Tigers (24-3) more than doubled Coronado in each quarter, turning the game into a rout with a 23-6 blitz in the third segment en route to a 59-21 victory on Friday night.

Sophomore guard Lacy Ferguson led three Elida players in double figures with 12 points, followed by sophomore forward Kasyn Creighton with 11 and junior forward Madison Haley with 10. Soledad Vigil paced the Lady Leopards (9-17) with eight points.

The Lady Tigers meet eighth-seeded Cimarron, a 61-23 winner over Mosquero, in a 3 p.m. Wednesday quarterfinal at Bernalillo H.S.

In other area Class 1A games:

Grady 63, Animas 54 — At Grady, sophomore Jordyn Stowe scored 26 points and junior Sage Starbuck added four 3-pointers and 17 points as the second-seeded Lady Bronchos (18-10) rode a strong start past scrappy Animas.

Grady led 18-11 at the quarter and played the Lady Panthers (11-17) on relatively even terms the rest of the way. Freshman Tierney Washburn led a trio in double figures for Animas with 12 points.

Grady faces seventh-seeded Walatowa Charter, an 80-43 winner over Vaughn on Friday, in an 11:30 a.m. quarterfinal game on Tuesday at Bernalillo.

Quemado 47, Floyd 39 — At Quemado, the fifth-seeded Lady Eagles (20-8) advanced to a 6:30 p.m. Wednesday quarterfinal against No. 4 Springer, turning back a spirited second-half comeback by Floyd.

Down 27-17 at halftime, the Lady Broncos (9-17) outscored Quemado 16-10 in the third period to make it close, but they couldn’t overcome their early deficit.

Senior post Autumn Nozie was the only player in double figures for either team, finishing with 11 points for Quemado. Floyd’s top scorer was senior guard Lyzette Belloc with nine points.

The Lady Eagles face fourth-seeded Springer, a 65-48 winner over Hondo on Friday, in a 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal on Wednesday at Bernalillo.
