CARLSBAD — It certainly wasn’t the way Clovis High’s girls wanted to end their season.
Take out Carlsbad freshman guard Carsyn Boswell, though, and it might have been a different story.
Boswell was far and away the best player on the court Friday night, pouring in 25 points to lift the fourth-seeded Cavegirls past the Lady Wildcats 53-18 in a Class 6A girls state round-of-16 game.
Carlsbad (26-2) advances to a 1:15 p.m. Tuesday quarterfinal game against fifth-seeded Mayfield, a 46-31 winner on Friday over Sandia, at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. Meantime, the Lady Cats’ season ended at 9-17.

Clovis' Serena Garcia drives into the post against Carlsbad's Lauryn Wade in the third quarter of Friday’s Class 6A first-round game at Carlsbad High School. the host Cavegirls defeated Clovis 53-18.
Clovis played the Cavegirls relatively even in the third quarter, outscored just 12-9. But the Lady Cats were already staring at a 22-point halftime deficit, and they managed just two points in the final period.
“It comes down to the same thing; we just can’t score,” CHS coach Jeff Reed said. “We had tons and tons and tons of chances, but we just could not capitalize.”
Carlsbad led 11-4 at the quarter, then outscored CHS 18-3 in the second period to take any suspense out of the contest.
No one else on either side was that close to double figures for either team. Junior post Monay Phillips led Clovis in scoring with seven points.
The defense-minded Cavegirls held the Lady Cats to just six field goals, and Clovis compounded its problems with a 5-for-14 outing from the free throw line.
“The sad thing is I felt like we had a great week of practices, but nothing materialized,” said Reed, whose teams lost the District 4-6A meetings to the Cavegirls 59-28 and 62-34.
The other two district teams were also ousted on Friday night, with Alamogordo losing at top-seeded Cibola 54-25 and ninth-seeded Hobbs dropping a 42-31 decision against Valley.
