Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Staff report
Clovis High’s tennis squads are in rebuilding mode this spring.
The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats each had one doubles team advance to the Class 6A state meet last spring, while the boys also sent their team, reaching the quarterfinals with a win over Santa Fe High before being ousted by in a 9-0 loss to La Cueva in the quarterfinal round.
Still, second-year coach Brenna Silveira is optimistic.
“There’s been huge improvement from last year,” she said as her squads prepare for Lovington’s Wildcat Open, a six-team, round-robin scheduled for today and Saturday. “We don’t have a whole lot of experience, but we’ve made improvement over last year.”
The Lovington meet will feature mini-duals, with two singles and two doubles matches against each of the other five teams. Clovis faces Portales at 9:30 a.m., Mayfield at 11 a.m. and Lovington at 2 p.m. today, then takes on Artesia at 8 a.m. on Saturday before closing against Lovington — boys at 11 a.m., girls at 12:30 p.m.
Junior Rojan Angadi moves up from No. 6 singles to No. 1 this year for the boys with junior Kayden Lamb, a move-in from Utah, taking the No. 2 spot. Rounding out the regular lineup will be junior Nick Donaldson at No. 3, senior Eduardo Hernandez at No. 4, junior J.J. Alvarado at No. 5 and sophomore Colby Coiner at No. 6.
In doubles, it’s scheduled to be Angadi-Lamb at No. 1, Donaldson-Alvarado at No. 2 and Coiner and eighth-grader David Heath at No. 3. This weekend, Angadi and Lamb will play singles with the other two teams filling out in doubles.
Senior Samantha Lee moves up from the No. 3 or 4 slot last year to No. 1 for the Lady Cats, followed by juniors Kylie Lee, Madison Credle and Mya Grimes, sophomore Jadan Andersen and eighth-grader Kyra Ramirez. Those six are slated to follow that order in doubles as well.
This weekend, Lee and Brooks will play singles, with Credle-Grimes and Anderson-Ramirez in doubles.
“Our girls team is very new,” Silveira said. “Kyra just started playing last year, and Jaden and Kylie and Maya were JV (players) last year.”
