Hounds hold on against Kingsville

PORTALES — As the seconds ticked away in the second half of ENMU’s game Wednesday night, one could be forgiven if it felt like the Greyhounds were on their way to losing another Lone Star Conference game they led throughout.

Fortunately for the Hounds, ENMU prevented a last-second collapse with a 74-71 defeat of Texas A&M-Kingsville 74-71.

Eastern New Mexico University freshman guard Brady Patterson is fouled on a drive by Texas A&M-Kingsville’s D.J. Weathers in the first half of Wednesday’s Lone Star Conference game at Greyhound Arena. Patterson had eight points, four assists and five rebounds in ENMU’s 74-71 victory.

With the game tied at 67 with less than 60 seconds left, ENMU’s (6-14, 2-6 LSC) Lawrence Domingo drove the lane for a quick layup to give the Hounds a two-point lead. On the ensuing possession, Domingo found Chaune Hill for an alley-oop dunk and a four-point lead with 30 seconds left.

However, the Javelinas (9-10, 1-7) weren’t going down without a fight. Cris Boleware drained a trey to cut the lead to just one. Fortunately, Kingsville was forced to foul Kevin Saiz who sank both free throws with 10 second left and the Hounds defense did the rest.

Saiz (10) and Javaan Mumtaz (25) were the only Hounds to score in double figures, but Domingo added 10 rebounds and nine points to his stat line.

“Javaan really shot the ball well, he came out with a lot of confidence,” ENMU coach Stott Carter said. “Our guys noticed that and gave him extra looks. Very unselfish play today. Kevin played really well. One of the things we tasked him with was guarding their point guard who did a good job. Kevin defensively was a huge difference.”

The last time ENMU played Kingsville, the Javelinas came away with a 74-61 victory.

“Eastern did a good job this time,” Kingsville coach Johnny Estelle said. “It was close both ways. They just made shots and executed well.”

ENMU never trailed throughout the second half and spent the majority of the game up by 5-7 points. Troy Jones (27), Cris Boleware (11) and DJ Weathers (11) all scored in double figures for Kingsville, with Jones getting a double-double as he added 18 total rebounds.

The Hounds head back on the road as they take on Angelo State on Saturday afternoon.
