2006: Police were warning area business owners to beware of a fraudulent check scheme.

Scammers were printing checks with phony account numbers and phony phone numbers for the banks.

Suspicious business owners were calling the number listed on the checks and being told funds were sufficient.

1946: Excessive speed led to two unrelated highway deaths in the area.

Elton Young, 18, of Texico was killed after losing control of his vehicle southwest of Elida, state police said. He was thrown from the car and died at the scene.

Pfc. Foster Blango of Endicott, New York, was a passenger in a car that overturned west of Clovis. He was tossed out of the vehicle, which then crushed him to death.

Five people were also injured in the two accidents.
