Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Winter storm Goliath has cost Clovis and Curry County taxpayers well over $150,000 so far, officials said last week.
Curry County Manager Lance Pyle told county commissioners last week the county has documented more than $100,000 in costs for equipment and labor that were directly related to the Christmas weekend blizzard.
Emergency Management Coordinator Dan Heerding said last week that the city of Clovis needed almost 2,000 hours of overtime to battle Goliath.
That’s almost $50,000 in extra pay to firefighters, police officers and public works employees, he said.
The city has not yet determined equipment costs related to the storm that left 8-12 inches of snow — most of it coming amidst 40 mph winds — and drifts taller than people.

Salvation Army Lt. Kelly Berggren last week began his Clovis Food Project.
Berggren said the service organization received about 1,000 pounds of food during a Saturday morning drive he hopes can become an ongoing event.
“We are asking people to become neighborhood coordinators and drop off shopping bags to friends and neighbors,” Berggren said.
“We supply the shopping bags and ask people to put a couple items in the bags when they go shopping.”
Food can then be dropped off at The Salvation Army, 317 E. Second St. in Clovis.
“All donated food stays in Clovis,” Berggren said. “This is truly neighbor helping neighbor.”
For information about the project, or to volunteer, call the Salvation Army at 575-762-3801.
