Junior Kassandra Harris notched a career-high 24 points, and Eastern New Mexico came out strong in the second half to pick up its first Lone Star Conference win of the season, 66-52 over Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night.
Mikaehla Connor added 10 and Briana White nine for ENMU (6-8, 1-3), which snapped a three-game losing streak.
After trading baskets for the first few minutes, the Greyhounds took the lead for good on a jumper by Harris with 5:37 to go in the first.
Ope Ibrahim, who scored 13 to lead the Javelinas (5-8, 0-3), got her team within three in the final minute of the second quarter, but ENMU’s Mikaehla Connor answered with a layup on the next possession and had another layup to close out a 12-2 run that bridged the second and third quarters.
The Javelinas never got closer than six the rest of the night, as the ENMU defense blanked Kingsville leading scorer Kaylin Roher on 0-of-8 shooting.
TaSheena Moore added 11 for the Javelinas, who lost their seventh-straight since starting the season 5-1 and are without a conference win since March 2014.
Senior guard Sarah Stinnett was held to just two points for ENMU, but grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and notched four of the team’s seven steals. Johna McClelland had six points, five rebounds and six of the team’s 10 blocks on the night.
ENMU shot 64 percent in the first half, led by as many as 17 and held a 22-7 edge in points off turnovers.
The Hounds return home for a 2 p.m. Saturday tipoff against Angelo State.
